Understanding Gibraltar Duty-Free Shopping Customs Limits

Published: May 15, 2026

Avoid any fines! Find out about Spain's border allowance for spirits, cigarettes, and perfume brought from Main Street.

Gibraltar Duty-Free Shopping Customs Limits

Gibraltar's Main Street is famous globally for its VAT-free shopping, drawing thousands of tourists hunting for bargains on spirits, cosmetics, tobacco, and electronics. However, the border checkpoint at La Línea de la Concepción is governed strictly by the Spanish Guardia Civil, and crossing back into Spain with excessive goods carries steep financial penalties.

Current Allowance Regulations (As of 2026)

If you are walking back over the frontier after a day of shopping, you must adhere to strict personal allowances:

  • Tobacco: The limit is typically 200 cigarettes (one standard carton), OR 100 cigarillos, OR 50 cigars, OR 250g of rolling tobacco per adult.
  • Alcohol: You are permitted either 1 litre of spirits (over 22% volume) OR 2 litres of fortified or sparkling wine, alongside 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer.
  • Other Goods: Fragrances, electronics, and general merchandise are capped by a cumulative monetary value (usually around €300 per adult).
