Flying to Gibraltar Airport or Malaga: How to Choose

Published: November 6, 2026

Should you fly to Gibraltar airport or Malaga? Compare flight choice, arrival checks and onward travel to help you pick the better airport for your trip.

Flying to Gibraltar Airport or Malaga: How to Choose

If you are deciding whether to fly to Gibraltar or Malaga, the answer depends on where you are flying from, what you plan to do afterwards, and how much flexibility you want. Gibraltar's own airport is the closest to the Rock, while Málaga is a much larger airport with a wider choice of flights and about two hours of road between it and the border. Neither is automatically better. This guide sets out the differences so you can decide for your own trip.

What Gibraltar International Airport offers

Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport sits right beside the town, on British Lines Road. For visitors whose only destination is Gibraltar, that closeness is its main attraction: you land and you are already on the Rock.

At the time of writing, the airport's website showed a small daily schedule. On the day we checked (6 November 2026) it listed flights from Birmingham, London Gatwick and London Heathrow, with flight codes suggesting easyJet and British Airways services. Schedules change with the season, so look at the airport's own flight pages for the current picture rather than relying on a snapshot like this one.

The airport lists a shop and café area, a lounge, check-in, car hire, parking and special assistance. Details of each are on its website.

What to expect on arrival in Gibraltar

GOV.UK explains that at Gibraltar's airport there are two sets of checks: Gibraltar immigration, and Schengen entry controls run by the Spanish authorities, including Entry/Exit System registration where it applies. After clearing both, you can cross the land border into Spain and the wider Schengen Area. GOV.UK also says that from 15 July 2026 you may need to declare certain goods to customs on arrival at the airport.

Rules in this area are changing under the UK–EU agreement on Gibraltar, so read the GOV.UK entry requirements for your nationality shortly before you travel. We summarise the wider picture in The Gibraltar Border After July 2026: What Has Changed.

What Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport offers

Aena's page for Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) lists shops and restaurants, car hire, vehicles with driver, a barrier-free assistance service, Wi-Fi, parking and VIP services such as lounges and a fast lane. Ground transport includes car, bus, taxi and the C1 train line between Málaga Centro Alameda and Fuengirola.

The main practical advantage is choice. A bigger airport usually means more airlines and more departure times, which can give you more options for dates and prices. Check the airlines directly for what is currently flying from your home airport.

The onward journey from Málaga

If you fly to Málaga and your destination is Gibraltar, you will need to get from the airport to the border. Our Málaga Airport to Gibraltar border route is about 125 km, with an estimated journey time of around 85 minutes using the toll motorway or around 105 minutes without tolls, according to the figures on our site. Real journeys vary with traffic, time of day and season.

Many travellers choose a private transfer to the Spanish side of the border at La Línea, then walk across into Gibraltar. You can see the details on our Málaga Airport to Gibraltar transfer page. Our drivers monitor flight arrival information, and your booking includes a meet and greet at arrivals.

Which should you choose?

Here are some questions that help:

  • Is Gibraltar your only stop? If so, a direct flight to Gibraltar, where one is available from your area, removes the road leg altogether.
  • Are you also visiting the Costa del Sol, Marbella or beyond? Málaga is usually the more natural gateway, because it is already on that coast.
  • Is flight choice or timing important? Compare both airports on your preferred dates, since the schedules differ.
  • Are you carrying a lot of luggage or travelling with a group? A transfer from Málaga can carry bags and passengers in one vehicle. Our SUV seats up to four passengers with room for up to four bags.
  • Are you flying home from a different airport than you arrived at? Open-jaw tickets are possible, but check carefully that your transfer times fit with your flights.

A useful tip is to price both options for your exact dates before deciding, and to allow for the cost and time of the onward journey when comparing them.
