Walking Across the Rock: The Unique Gibraltar Airport Runway Footpaths

Published: May 26, 2026

All you need to know about walking across the active aircraft runway immediately after passing Spanish-side customs.

Walking Across the Rock: The Gibraltar Airport Runway

There are very few places on Earth where pedestrians routinely stroll across a fully operational international airport runway. In Gibraltar, it’s not just a novelty—until very recently, it was an absolute necessity for anyone entering the territory by foot from Spain.

A Geographical Anomaly

Due to the extreme space constraints of the 6.8 square-kilometre peninsula, the runway of Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) intersects directly with Winston Churchill Avenue, the primary road connecting the border with the city center.

When you take our private transfer from Malaga and we drop you at the La Línea border, you walk through the crossing and emerge immediately onto Gibraltar soil. Historically, pedestrians and vehicular traffic then had to physically cross the active tarmac.

The Runway Protocol

If you are crossing during an aircraft takeoff or landing sequence, sirens sound, and barriers drop across the avenue—much like a traditional railway crossing. The road is swept for debris, and pedestrians wait mere meters away as commercial jets throttle past.

Recent Infrastructure Changes: While a newly inaugurated tunnel now handles vehicular traffic, diverting cars continuously under the runway, the famous pedestrian crossing remains open and active. Walking across the vast, flat expanse of the tarmac with the towering, monolithic limestone structure of the Rock of Gibraltar looming directly ahead of you is a surreal, unforgettable experience for first-time visitors.

It is an incredibly photogenic moment, and just another reason why walking across the frontier is significantly more engaging than sitting in a border tunnel queue.
